Making your bed

"As you make your bed, so you must lie in it," Daniel J. Boorstein, American social historian and educator (1914)

Making your bed is one of the fundamentals that we may have learned growing up. While some of us evolved into bed-making adults, others have rebelled and shunned this societal requirement.

"Make your bed!" is a mantra in some households, and others are more casual about making beds.

A made bed may be a comforter tugged over crumpled sheets, or it may require hospital corners and decorative pillows.

Yet, there are some for whom making a bed is not even a part of their reality. Unmade, crumpled beds are décor du jour in many college apartments.

"Why make it? It's just going to get messed up again tonight," is an argument.

There are reasons to make beds and believe it or not, none of those reasons are "Because your mother said so." Making your bed adds a sense of control to your life. You are controlling your surroundings and it takes a few minutes.

In feng shui, the Chinese art or practice of arranging objects, unmade beds are considered negative energy. If the covers are smooth and orderly, the energy is thought to flow serenely around the space. If the covers are crumpled and messy, the energy gets stuck. Rather than flowing and soothing the room, the energy clumps up, doesn't move and creates a stagnate space.

The theory says, that if you help the energy flow around you, then you make space for other things to happen in your life. For example, if you are not distracted by a crumpled bed, then you can turn your mind to higher things. Expend that mind energy elsewhere.

Close your eyes and imagine for a moment, first, your room with an unmade bed and dirty clothes scattered around the room. How does that feel? How does it feel to come home from a long day at work and walk into that cluttered room?

Now, imagine only that the bed is made and the dirty clothes are picked up. How does that feel? You are now ready to change clothes to go out, cook dinner or lounge on the bed to watch for updates on Britney Spears on "Entertainment Tonight."

Assume that you do not buy into the idea of feng shui. There are still good reasons to make your bed.
It is good for the psyche. No matter how busy you are or how much you have going on, if you can make your bed and wash the breakfast dishes before you leave, your evening will no longer seem overwhelming. When you come home, you are no longer walking into a life out of control. Your life is in control because the breakfast dishes are washed and the bed is made.

Maybe mother was right. It is best to make your bed in the morning.
